Friday was a very happy day in our home. John graduated from the Naval Post Graduate School and officially is done with his master’s degree! The ceremony was long, and though Olivia and Cliff did great the first 20 minutes or so, we didn’t make it through the whole thing. Thankfully we did get to see John walk the stage! Olivia was so excited for John and kept sporadically clapping and shouting, “yay, daddy!”
After the graduation, we went back home to put the kids down for a nap so we could go out and celebrate that evening. I had found a Groupon for a burger place in Carmel-by-the-Sea, so we were heading that way for the night. We’d been telling Olivia that we would all go to the ocean after John graduated, so I cut up a watermelon and packed some warm clothes for the kids.
We really enjoyed our dinner out at 400* Gourmet Burgers. It was the first time we’d been out to dinner as a family in a very long time…maybe since Cliff was a few weeks old. The burgers were delicious and the waitress didn’t seem phased by us asking for them with lettuce instead of a bun, so it was paleo too! We’re lately a cross between paleo and near Full GAPS, so eating out can be a challenge. But that’s okay because it’s always cheaper to eat at home, so we save money too.
We wandered around some shops and did some window art-looking (Carmel is full of art galleries and cute shops), grabbing a hot latte to split on the way down to the beach. The weather was absolutely gorgeous – a perfect day in Carmel-by-the-Sea. It was probably 70 degrees and sunny, with a still calm in the air. As we walked down to the beach, the sun was getting close to the horizon. We were excited to see a beach sunset.
John took Olivia down to the water when we got there and I stayed with Cliff, who was taking his short evening nap in the stroller. Olivia was having so much fun that she didn’t want to come back up. She loves the ocean. And she loves her daddy.
When they got back to me and Cliff (who was awake now), we opened up the watermelon.
The sun was setting, we were about to enjoy our watermelon, Liv was digging in the sand and Cliff was happy snuggling with John, when I popped open the lid and at the same moment Olivia threw a huge handful of sand behind her back…and straight into the bowl of watermelon. John and I just laughed. It was already a picture perfect evening – something had to go wrong! So we watched the sun set and ate sandy watermelon. It was a good end to a wonderful day!
