Night out in the Bay

20130922-152543.jpgphoto 1 (2)It is amazing to me sometimes that we live less than a mile from one of the world’s best aquariums. People literally come from all over the globe to visit it. When we moved here we thought it would be worth it to get passes and it turned out we were right. Friday night we went to our first members night at the aquarium. It opens late in the evening just for members to enjoy the exhibits and the smaller crowds. We hired a sitter, hopped on our bicycles and hit the Monterey Bay Coastal Path. It got warm that day – it actually hit 70 degrees – so the evening bike ride was nice and not too cool. We stopped by Monterey’s Tasty Olive Bar before going into the aquarium. It is a nice little shop that has vats of flavored balsamic vinegars and olive oils to mix and taste. A pretty original place! The aquarium was so much fun! It felt like freedom just navigating through the aquarium without a big stroller laden with all the things you need for an infant and a toddler. We actually spent time looking in detail at some tanks that we’d barely noticed before. We saw cuttlefish, fuzzy star fish, and I learned what White Sea Anemone is (hint: it looks like a cauliflower and cotton balls had a baby). We saw some creepy eels that may or may not have given me nightmares – but they were pretty cool to watch!

After the aquarium we biked a couple more blocks to check out Bulldog’s British Pub – a burger place we’ve been wanting to try for over a year. They did have good burgers! And nice service too, though the atmosphere was a bit louder than we are used to. It’s a good thing we stopped for some food because the bike ride home is all up hill. It was beautiful seeing all the victorian homes lit up at night. I have been wanting to do a night-time painting – maybe I will now that I got a little inspiration! It was a very enjoyable date night out. We talked, we dreamed, we laughed – just the two of us. I’m so thankful for this break from the fleet – yes I miss it sometimes, but the time that John has been able to spend closer to home has been really wonderful. It’s been such a blessing for our family being here together!

  1. Hey, that is awesome! Adam and I went out on a date last night, too! It was definitely a nice middle of the week kind of break. Hopefully we can visit the aquarium someday with you guys…
